Vinyl Siding – Designing with Vinyl

Styles
The three most popular vinyl siding styles are clapboard, dutchlap (shiplap) and shingles. Each has its own unique look and architectural reference. Different styles are also available in a variety of panel exposures or "board widths." For example, Double 4" clapboard has two 4"-wide panels and creates a narrow clapboard appearance; Single 8" clapboard and 6-1/2" beaded panels give the impression of wide clapboard.

For a totally distinct look or as an attractive supplement to wood, stucco or stone siding, consider using Soffit in a vertical format.

The clapboard profile (2 and 3) is traditional in style while extremely versatile. Other vinyl siding styles include: (1) Shingles; (4) Vertical; (5) Beaded; (6) Dutchlap (shiplap); and (7) Soffit.

Finishes
Siding panels come in different finishes that affect both the look and color of the siding. Smooth finishes generally feature a painted look with subtle brush strokes. Woodgrain finishes simulate various degrees of natural wood textures.

CertainTeed offers the widest selection of siding finishes in the industry, enabling you to create home exteriors with unique looks, beauty and character. Consider these three finishes: (1) Cedar grain finish; (2) Woodgrain finishes; and (3) Smooth finishes.

The Impact of Color
Although color can dramatically affect the overall look of a house, there aren't any wrong choices. The most important rule to follow when selecting siding colors is to choose what you like. Here are some other basic color guidelines that you might want to consider:

  • Light colors make your house look larger.
  • Dark colors make your house look smaller.
  • Cool colors make features recede.
  • Monochromatic schemes will unify and simplify the exterior of the house.
  • Contrasting shades add interest.

If your home has an asymmetrical design with many different sized windows, keep the number of colors to a minimum.

A Finished Look
To achieve the finished look of wood craftsmanship, we developed a complete line of architecturally accurate trim options. A complete design can be achieved by combining siding styles, colors and decorative trim with an architectural flair. Whether the goal is to accentuate the lines of a home or simply add interest to its exterior, no other manufacturer can offer the variety of styles, finishes and accessories.

Decorative trim includes (1) Crown molding; (2) Corner posts; (3) Corner blocks and Rosettes; (4) Gable trim; and (5) Cornice molding. Use these accessories to highlight windows, doors, corners and gables.
